At Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games, China’s Tiangong Ultra ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds in a heat—then 8.86, then 8.64 in the final. Honor’s Lightning hit 9.32 in a test. Usain Bolt’s 9.58 from 2009 is now a human footnote.
One year earlier the same Tiangong model needed 21.50 seconds.
That is the rate of progress in robotics.
The time has been more than halved. Legs were lengthened. Control software tightened. Peak speed reached 14.5 meters per second.
Oh, the half-marathon fell too: Lightning’s 50:26 last April beat the elite human pace.
This is not an official World Athletics mark. The robots still smash into crash pads, emit sparks, and leave on stretchers. Balance and graceful deceleration are not yet their strong point. Folding laundry and factory tasks remain harder than a straight-line sprint on a known track.
That gap is the point for operators and investors.
China is treating humanoids as a strategic industry—state-backed labs, and 2,000-plus machines across 51 events that mix sport with warehouse and care simulations. Rapid hardware-software iteration is the real product. Speed on the oval is just a proxy for the mobility, perception, and autonomy that factories and logistics actually need.
Ofcourse, the record is theatre. The year-over-year leap is the signal. Reliability and dexterity are the final frontiers, after which our current way of life will be unrecognisable. Hopefully, that progress will usher in an era of abundance, not one that splits the globe into technological haves and have-nots.
